Port of Auckland Service Announcement - September 2018
Further to recent releases from Mainfreight on the Ports of Auckland, we continue to see challenges around operations at the Port, with recent communications from the port company indicating that they believe the constraints currently being experienced will remain through until Christmas.
The POA has outlined the following factors which have contributed to the situation as it exists today.
- Restricted yard capacity as a consequence of building work in preparation for automation to come on stream in late 2019.
- Yard congestion that existed prior to the recent the accident due to a number of the larger North Asia Services being delayed due to bad weather.
- 2 weeks of disrupted services during the accident period where containers continued to come into the port.
- Greater caution in the use of straddle carrier equipment.
- Delayed vessels, both at the POA Terminal and other Ports, resulting in changes to shipping schedules in an effort to realign back to original port call dates through omission of Ports and/or moving cargo between ships. This is adding to congestion challenges with yard utilisation sitting between 110-120+% on a daily basis.
- Labour supply and management of fatigue within the existing POA team.
- Strong seasonal import volumes, compounded with recent weather events over the last weekend in North Asia, resulting in vessel delays.
POA has stated that they realistically expect to be in this mode of operation for the remainder of the import peak period.
