Customs Update | May 1st 2015

Following significant interceptions of Stink Bugs arriving from the US, the Department of Agriculture took emergency measure in January 2015 to ensure the invasions of these pests were terminated.

As a result of these emergency measures the risk has now subsided and the Department of Agriculture will cease these emergency measures as of May 1st, 2015.

What does this mean?

Target goods arriving on or after this date will no longer be subject to pre-shipment treatment requirements.

Are Stink Bugs still a threat?

The Stink Bug season has now completed and the Department of Agriculture have taken this experience on board and will be fully monitoring the situation for the next season which is October/November.

Advice regarding supplies of methyl bromide to Australia

Methyl bromide is the chemical used for fumigation purposes when importing and exporting cargo. One of the main sources of this chemical is Israel and due to current industrial action the Department of Agriculture has released a statement regarding the reduced supply and affects it has when importing and exporting cargo.

Quarantine are requesting importers liaise with suppliers to ensure imported goods meet import conditions and are free from quarantine pests to reduce the possible impact on delays being incurred due to low supplies of MB for approved treatment provider here in Australia

Quarantine are reviewing possible alternative treatments should matter worsen, that are both permitted and effective i.e. COLD STORAGE etc. and where alternative cannot be identified, they may consider whether the goods can be safely allowed entry due to low risk to Australia biosecurity.

Exporters proposing to use MB treatment should liaise with their treatment provided.
